The “Ashby Park” sign at the park space at Dewees Avenue and Coquina Place was recently unveiled, with family and friends of the late Eleanor and Garnett Ashby on hand, in recognition of the couple’s significant contributions to their neighborhood, Atlantic Beach, and greater Jacksonville. The City Commission approved the park naming at was informally monikered “Marvin’s Garden” after the name was approved by the Arts, Recreation and Culture Committee. Earlier this year, the Commission adopted a systematic and consistent naming system to ensure that parks, recreation areas and buildings are easily identified; ensure that the names are consistent with the values and character of Atlantic Beach and/or the neighborhood served; encourage public participation in the naming, renaming and dedication of parks, recreation areas and buildings; and encourage donations of land, buildings and monetary gifts by individuals and/or groups.
