As summer approaches and alternative transportation methods like bicycles and electric bikes (e-bikes) continue to gain popularity in Atlantic Beach, the Atlantic Beach Police Department (ABPD), in cooperation with the Neptune Beach Police Department and Jacksonville Beach Police Department are announcing enhanced enforcement efforts to ensure the safe and responsible operation of these vehicles. The ABPD recognizes the convenience and recreational benefits of bicycles and eBikes, but also acknowledges the potential safety concerns associated with their use, particularly regarding pedestrian safety and adherence to traffic laws. Officers will be conducting enhanced enforcement patrols on March 21st and 22nd throughout Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Jacksonville Beach ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
"We are committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for all residents and visitors," said Chief Victor Gualillo of the ABPD. "As e-bike use increases, it's crucial that we work to ensure responsible operation and adherence to traffic regulations."
Key Enforcement Areas:
• Pedestrian Safety:
ABPD officers will be actively patrolling areas with high pedestrian traffic, focusing on bicycle and e-bike operators who fail to yield to pedestrians or operate their bikes in a manner that poses a hazard to pedestrians.
• Traffic Law Compliance:
Enforcement efforts will target bicycle and e-bike operators who fail to obey traffic signals, stop signs, or other traffic laws. This includes ensuring that e-bikes are operated in designated bike lanes or roadways where permitted.
• Speed Limits:
ABPD will enforce speed limits, as e-bikes can reach speeds that are unsafe for pedestrians and other vehicles.
• Equipment Requirements:
Officers will also be checking for proper equipment, including functioning lights, bells, and brakes, as required by state law.
Tips for Safe Bicycle and eBike Operation:
• Obey Traffic Laws:
Treat e-bikes as bicycles and follow all applicable traffic laws. Know local laws governing e-bikes.
• Be Aware of Surroundings:
Pay close attention to pedestrians and other vehicles, and maintain a safe following distance.
• Use Designated Bike Lanes:
When available, utilize designated bike lanes to reduce the risk of collisions.
• Maintain Equipment:
Ensure that your bicycle and e-bike is in good working order, with functioning lights, brakes, and other safety equipment. Helmet use is encouraged.
• Ride Responsibly:
Avoid riding under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and never engage in reckless or dangerous behavior.
