Beach Renourishment 2016

April 2017:  During the summer of 2016 the beaches in Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach and Atlantic Beach will be renourished by pumping approximately 800,000 cubic yards of sand from offshore onto the beach.  The City of Atlantic Beach will not be required to pay for this work as it is being funded by our Federal, State & County governments.  The total cost is approximately $26 million.

The work is currently planned to start in Jacksonville Beach and move north at the rate of about 300 ft. per day.  This makes it likely that the work in Atlantic Beach will occur later in the summer.  The work is planned to continue 24 hours per day.

There will be rolling closures of about ¼ to ½ mile of the beach each day for the safety of beachgoers.  These closures will be enforced by the contractor, supplemented by local police.  Please cooperate with the short beach closures for your safety.

Provisions for protection of sea turtle nests are included in the project and are being coordinated with the Sea Turtle Patrol.

Remember that future funding for this work is dependent on maintaining beach parking available to the general public.  Parking inventories are performed periodically.  Current parking must be maintained and increased when possible to help us obtain future beach renourishment.  Obstructions in the right of ways can hinder parking availability.  Renourishment funds are limited and competitive between Counties.  Available parking in all areas of the beach is one large competitive factor.

Hurricane Matthew in October 2016 disrupted the Beach Renourishment project and caused damage to the dunes.  It was restarted in November 2016, but it was soon halted because the contractor had another contractual commitment in Georgia.  This commitment has been completed and the contractor is scheduled to return to Atlantic Beach in the second week of April to complete the project.
